Action Item: Law Enforcement Officers

WHAT IS IT ?

Question MarkA grant planning and management matrix is a powerful tool that can be used to fully answer a prospective grant solicitation. The matrix helps perform many functions of developing and writing a winning grant proposal, including:

  • Builds a case for pursuing a grant
  • Assures you that every part of the statement of work has been answered
  • Assigns responsibilities for answering the grant and doing the work
  • Defines potential strategic alliances and the roles of partners
  • Provides an outline for presenting a justifiable budget
A matrix is a great inside and outside sales tool. The matrix allows you and your organization's senior management to quickly grab the essence of your strategy for winning the grant.

HOW DO YOU USE IT ?

Question MarkLaw enforcement agencies can also use the grant writing matrix to better develop or contribute to a winning grant proposal. The matrix can be used to help guide the writing, management and budgeting process from start to finish. The matrix can be used to develop a community based policing approach to school safety because the matrix facilitates the development of partnerships. The matrix is also the functional instrument for the development of a collaborative leadership dynamic.

WHO DO YOU INVOLVE?

ACTIVITY

Exercise--Using the grant solicitation that you have on hand construct a matrix using the technical requirements vs. team members or members of your organization who will be responsible for doing the work. After the matrix has been completed, construct and write an two paragraph internal logic statement as to why your team makes sense. Complete this in the form of a formal memo that will be sent to senior management and ask a colleague to critique your approach. [see tutorial for model matrix]

Questions to consider:

  • How can bring collaborators on-board your effort?
  • How do you know they suited for the tasks at hand?
  • How does the matrix help in budgeting and cross referencing efforts?
