NCPC "School Safety and Security Toolkit" http://www.ncpc.org/ncpc/ncpc/?pg=2088-13054

Action Item: Administrators

WHAT IS IT ?

Question MarkThe NCPC is a national educational and nonprofit organization, the nation's focal point for crime prevention information also known as Take a Bite Out of Crime or the "McGruff" crime people. NCPC's mission is to enable people to create safer and more caring communities [including schools], by addressing the cause of crime and violence and reducing opportunities for crime to occur. NCPC offers as part of its web site information regarding a "School Safety and Security Toolkit: A Guide for Parents, Schools, and Communities." The guide is available in several formats.

HOW DO YOU USE IT ?

Question MarkSchool administrators should use the guide to review the various forms of security measures currently in use regarding school safety and security. The administrator can be a catalyst for creating the action team necessary to address relevant issues. Effective use of this toolkit will ensure a well-rounded team is in place as well as a comprehensive, cost-effective, and efficient school safety and security strategy is implemented.

WHEN DO YOU USE IT?

Question MarkSchool administrators should use this guide to begin piecing together, a cross-section of the community concerned about school safety and security.

WHY DO YOU USE IT?

Question MarkTo enhance the security of a school and ultimately support a "climate" of learning rather than fear associated with personal safety or property damage.

WHO DO YOU INVOLVE?

Question MarkAs mentioned earlier, an "action team" is the place to start. The action team should include representatives from law enforcement, school administration officials, teachers, students, business professionals, and faith leadership representatives along with other interested participants. Other members could include PTA/PTO officers, concerned parents, board of education representatives, school resource officers and security personnel, and students. Law enforcement personnel engaged specifically in crime prevention, community policing, and the like, would benefit from this guide.
