Student Leadership
School leaders often overlook the positive role students can play in promoting safer schools. In order to harness the youthful optimism and drive of student leaders, schools need to provide the following:

  • Opportunities for student leadership;
  • Student participation by encouraging student communication, feedback, and contributions;
  • Student peer mediation;
  • Student commitment through positive parental involvement in the school;
  • Student care through positive intervention services for students with drug and alcohol problems;
  • Student-centered Crisis Management Services;
  • Crime and violence prevention curriculum; and
  • Finally, student-focused positive learning environments by taking the concerns of students seriously and encouraging them to take an active role in their education.
