Law Enforcement officers often become involved with school safety issues only after a crime has been committed or are called in to enforce behavioral issues that are better dealt with at the school level. Appropriately partnering with law enforcement to create safer schools means working with Community Policing groups and School Resource Officers while safety plans are being developed, and looking at law enforcement and fire safety operations as more than just "services" to be called on an as-needed basis. Law enforcement, for their part, should give extra attention to patrolling the vicinity of schools, especially before and after school hours. They should commit to collaborating with a school to enact positive and improved school safety measures.
The materials relevant to this audience emphasize collaboration between police, fire, and school administration, and include tutorials on CPTED - Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design, the role of the School Resource Officer, and issues in community policing.
